.
Sunday 24, May 2010
Title:   Grace in his Commandments
Topic: 10 Commandments

Introduction
Purpose of the 10 Commandments
Born out of love for His children. GOD sought to”- 1John 5:1-5
1.      Protection and five us guidance against false teaching and the enemy of our soul,
2.      TO give us an understanding of our creation
3.      To give us civil guidance on how to relate to one another.

Prior to God giving the Children of Israel the LAW, they were living in Egypt for over 400 years. They had forgotten most if not all of the customs of their forefathers. They may have even forgotten God all together.
To the point where, when God sent Moses to take them out of Egypt, Moses had to ask God   Exodus 3:12-15

Where there is no guidance, the people become lost. God did not meant this for His people, but for His glory to shine through us, sometimes we need to go through hardship. This also builds our character and confidence in God.

Upon leaving Egypt, God had to show his people the clean and correct way to live. He needed to purge His people of the Pagan style worship that the Egyptians did. The worshiped many gods of the elements; for example Ra, the sun god,   etc. It is not inconceivable to believe that the Israelites adopted some of this behavior over the 400 years in bondage. It is Cleary documented in their behavior when Moses left them for a brief moment to meet with God.
(Idols and Alters) -Exodus 20:22-26

It was not meant to limit us but to direct and protect us through this evil world.
We have an option to accept it or reject it. God does not force us.

Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hollowed it.”

Jesus himself said He has not cone to do away with the LAW but to fulfill it.
 Matthew 5:17
Current worldview
1.      To remove the LAW from every public place, because it represent religion. This position deserves a deeper look into the law. Is the law really about religion or about civil obedience?

2.      The Law was for the Jews and it is done away with today.

Why Man need the 10 Commandments today
A relationship between God and man has existed from the creation of time, to now. This relationship is God’s position as Owner and Man’s role as Manager of God’s goods. In this relationship God makes a unilateral covenant with man to supply all his needs. In the book of Matthew 6: 25-32, Jesus tells us not to worry about our needs, that He will provide them. God further tells Man that if he would obey Him and keep His commandments, Man will live his life in prosperity and receive all the blessings due him.
We will first look at the commandments then review the details of the relationship, i.e., the commitments and blessings promised us. Finally, we will discuss why man refuses to live up to his end of the relationship, which would allow him to receive these promised blessings.
In Exodus 19: 5 God says, if my people “…. will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine.” The written commandments are first found in the book of Exodus, which tells of God on Mt. Sinai with his own hands writing them on tablets of stone. They are given to Moses, who is instructed to give them to God’s people as a covenant, or promise, between God and Man.
The first three commandments are between God and Man. Here God is instructing man how to view Him and what relationship to have with Him. Exodus 20:1-17
God without a doubt has established the relationship with man in these first three commandments.

The Fourth Commandment is the most peculiar of all. Here God does not command man what he must not do, by saying ‘Thou shall not’, but rather God admonishes man to remember.
With this commandment, Man is now asked to play a part in this relationship. He is instructed to do an act, which differs from the first three restraining Man from doing an act. On this commandment Man has to step up to the plate and work with God.
The last five is the relationship between Man and Man. It teaches us how to live with each other in this world. God not only expects us to respect and fear Him as the creator in the first three commandment and remember His creations in the forth, but now He expects us to respect others and their temporary possessions.

The commandments are the cornerstone of this relationship between God and Man. Now let us look at the details of this relationship.

God being the creator provides us with Life - the breath of life; Time - day and night; and Material - possessions. Man in return brings to this relationship sin. “For all has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23We have nothing to offer to this relationship except our sinful self. Without Jesus’ cloak of righteousness we are not even worthy to enter into this relationship. Thus God promises if we obey his commandments and accept this relationship, which consist of Possessions, Time and Life we will not want for anything.
Now we must understand the detail of such a relationship. The first aspect of this relationship is to understand what is offered and then what is expected.

Rewards and punishment for obedience to the law
We will be his treasured possession. Exodus 19:3-6
Rewards and punishments- Leviticus 26
The commandments are holy and righteous,- Roman 7:12

Future of the 10 commandments
We will need to keep it now in order to learn how to keep it in heaven.
The conclusion of the matter:
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

The LAW is about LOVE:
Galatians 5:14
1 Timothy 1:5
John 14:15
John 15:12
We should delight in his Law: Ps. 119:33-40

Appeal:
Choose God’s Love.
