Presentation # 8 - Sanctuary Wednesday 12, 2010
Title: Sanctuary
Topic: Treasures in Heaven
I. What is Sanctuary?
a. The dwelling place of God among the people of Israel. (Exodus 25:8-9)
The Tabernacle consisted of three compartments of rooms: (Exodus 36:8-18)
One> The Courtyard (Exodus 38:9-20
Two>The Holy Place (Lev. 16:24)
Three>The Most Holy (Lev 16:17
Body (20 Minutes)
II. What does the Sanctuary represents?
a. Seeking forgiveness from God daily by offering sacrifice of animals and The cleansing of the sins of Israel on an annual basis. - The Day of Atonement. (Leviticus 16:15-17)
b. We need to understand something about the ceremonial system in the Old Testament.
c. Since the time of Moses, the Jews followed a detailed worship system that centered on their earthly sanctuary service, either in the portable tabernacle or in the Hebrew temple.
d. These sacrifices and offerings were modeled after a pattern God gave to Moses.
e. The services of the earthly sanctuary were to serve as an illustration of the plan of salvation.
f. The offering of a lamb without blemish, for example, pointed forward to the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, who laid down his sinless life as a sacrifice on our behalf.
g. Two main services were connected with the sanctuary—
i. the daily service
ii. The yearly service.
Daily Services: Here’s what happened in a typical daily service. A person who had sinned brought a sacrifice to the temple. He confessed his sin over the animal and the animal was killed. A priest caught the blood in a basin, poured most of it out at the base of the altar, and then took the rest of it into the sanctuary. In this way, sin was symbolically transferred from the sinner to the substitute, to the sanctuary.
Again, that innocent slain lamb pointed forward to Christ’s ultimate sacrifice on our behalf.
Now, in a sense, this sacrificial blood brought sin into the sanctuary. Represents Jesus takes our sins upon Himself.
Then the yearly service was required. On the tenth day of the seventh month of the religious year, the Hebrews participated in the Annual Service: Day of Atonement. That’s when the sanctuary was cleansed. (Leviticus 16:29, 30)
It was a fore shadow of the heavenly sanctuary (Psalms 102:19)
III. Explain the furniture in the Sanctuary:
a. Altar of Sacrifice-Outer Court/Court yard(Exodus 38:1-7)
i. Killing of an animal to symbolize the remittance of sin.
ii. The shedding of blood represents the offering necessary for the atonement of sin.
b. Basin for washing-Outer Court (Exodus 38:8
i. Washing of the Priest before coming to God. Cleaning of one.
c. The lamp stand –Holy Place (Exodus 37:17-23)
The light-symbolic to the Holy Spirit present His people.
d. Table on which the Shewbread was kept-Holy Place (Exodus 37:10-16)
Center of union and communion for the priesthood. 12 loves of fresh bread placed daily
Priests were to abide in the Holy Place and eat the bread (Lev. 24:9)
Metaphor for our communion with God.
e. Alter of Incense-Holy Place (Exodus 37:25-28)
i. Prayers of forgiveness offered by the Priest on behalf of the people of Israel and himself.
ii. Intercession & Praise (Psalm 141:2)
iii. Close to the veil-before the Holy of holy
f. The Ark of the covenant- Most Holy Place (Holy of Holy)
i. Dwelling place of God among his people, behind the veil.
ii. Contains the 10 Commandments, bowl of manor (Exodus 27:1-9)
g. The Mercy Seat rested on top of the Ark between two golden Cherubim (Psalm 80:1)
1. The wages of sin is Death (Romans 6:23). The sprinkling of blood on the Mercy seat testified that a death had occurred. Once the bold was applied to the Mercy Seat, God’s holiness was satisfied and His Grace and Mercy was again extended.
2. High Priest could never enter beyond the veil (Exodus 25:22)
3. Presence of God symbolized as a cloud will fill the room.
4. If the sacrifice was accepted then the right Cherubim would eliminate, if the offering was unaccepted the Left one would be eliminated, and the High Priest would die.
IV. The importance of the Sanctuary:
Past –Symbolic of Earthly Dwelling of God and the process through which God people receive forgiveness –(Exodus 40:34-38
Day of Atonement:
1. Leviticus 16:1-10
2. Leviticus 16:20-22
3. Leviticus 16:29-34
Present and Future: Jesus Crucified represents the killing of the lamb on the Day Atonement.
During the feast of Passover, in the spring of AD 31, Jesus was crucified.
Law of Sacrifice Ended: - The Jewish sacrificial system no longer had any meaning. This was the Law that was done away with after the death of Christ and Not the 10 Commandments. We will see in late meeting that the 10 Commandments still stands today and will stand for ever.
Christ, our Passover Lamb, had been sacrificed. Now it is His Blood that saves us and not an animal. Glory be to God. Jesus Christ:
(Hebrews 10:1-7)
Hebrews 10:4
Revelation 15:5
Jesus finish the work and is now our High Priest, petitioning on our behalf.
The sanctuary is about the work of Jesus – good and evil - not some earthly political figure. (Matthew 27:51)
[SABBATH AFTERNOON WE WILL LOOK INTO THE PROPHECY OF CHRIST IN THE SANCTUARY-2300 DAYS PROPECY]
Hebrews 10:19-23
